Ever wonder why the New Testament opens with an elaborate family tree? My favorite answer lies with the five women listed: Tamar (slept with her father-in-law), Rahab (a prostitute), Ruth (an outsider), Bathsheba (the “other” woman), and Mary (a young girl). It was unusual for women to make the list so what does is mean that these particular ones are among the branches? And, when you dive into their stories, you really wonder, What’s SHE Doing Here??

But as we dive into answering that question, we begin to look in the mirror and apply the answers to our own stories. What am I Doing Here?

Does my sinful past disqualify me as a follower of Christ? Is Jesus ashamed of me? How can God use someone like me? What kind of mercy does He offer and how can I offer that same grace here in our church and community? Then, as you consider the gospel presented in this boring genealogy, your women can begin to ask What are WE Doing Here?

If you are a fan of Mission Impossible movies, you are familiar with Ethan Hawke opening a mysterious package and listening to an impossible request that immediately self-destructs. Well, Paul drops one of those tapes at our feet in Philippians 4 when he says, ”I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.” What?? Most days this kind of contentment seems as impossible as an Ethan Hawke mission. Yet, God offers this as a reality—to be content where you are—in the good and the bad, in the mundane and the extreme. What does Paul have that I don’t have?? Let’s look at God’s promise to give us the impossible for the seasons of life we live in today.

I didn’t even plan this pregnancy. Why is God letting me miscarry?

When I finally got settled in a new city, why did I lose my job?

Why would God give me a desire to marry and not introduce me to “Mr. Right?”

This doesn’t make sense.

I find myself thinking this a lot as I listen to friends’ stories or hear the voice in my head, but why would God do it this way? Ever wonder why God is letting things unfold the way the way they are in your life or in someone else’s? Let’s study two passages – one about a dumb bird and one about a party-pooper moment – that help us answer the Why’s we face.

What is Holiness? Is it so old-fashioned a word that we hesitate to even mention it in polite company? We don’t want to talk about it because we will sound goody-two-shoes or like we are from Mars to our friends? Or, perhaps we fear our church circles will think we don’t lean into God’s grace and that we are trying to earn our salvation? Then there is the real possibility we are just too ashamed to bring it up for fear of exposing our hidden sins. Yet, holiness should not be a taboo subject for God’s people. More so, God wants us to act holy. Yikes. This can be an overwhelming thought for women who struggle in today’s office cubicles, school carpools, and college classrooms! So, let’s tackle the idea of holiness in two sessions. First, let’s define holiness and find out its source. Second, let’s see what holiness looks like for women in today’s cultural climate.
